G A SAVAGE (POSSIBLY) - Cornwall & Devon

The G.A. Savage, *possibly* torpedoed in 1917, is one of those wrecks that just feels like history. Down at 24 metres, it’s a dark, silty dive, typical of this stretch of coast, so a good torch is essential. We love the way the ship’s structure, still quite intact in places, emerges from the gloom, especially if you catch it on a day when the light penetrates a little. You’ll find schools of cod and pollock hanging around the deeper sections, and the deck plates are often covered in dead man’s fingers, their orange and white fronds waving gently in the mild currents. Our favourite part is nosing around the engine room, if conditions allow, where you can still make out some of the machinery – a real window into its working life. This is a dive for the wreck enthusiasts, those who appreciate the narrative of a ship rather than just the fish count. You’ll spend your bottom time exploring the skeletal remains, feeling the chill of the North Atlantic, and imagining the final moments of this old steamer. It’s a contemplative dive, suited to experienced divers comfortable with limited visibility and the occasional strong surge.
