GASPARD DE LA NUIT - Cornwall & Devon

Gaspard de la Nuit is a proper Cornish wreck, sunk in '77 after a leak, and we love it for its moody atmosphere. It sits upright at 36 metres, remarkably intact for its age and the exposure it gets. You drop onto the deck, usually into a green gloom that just adds to the feeling of exploring something truly lost. The mast still stands, often pointing towards a shaft of sunlight, and the stern section holds together well. We’ve found conger eels tucked into the ribs, their heads poking out from under plates of rust. The decks are home to plenty of squat lobsters, and often a few plump dogfish cruise by. This isn’t a colourful, tropical dive, but it’s real, raw history, and for divers who appreciate the character of cold-water wrecks, Gaspard de la Nuit delivers. Our favourite time to dive it is on a slack tide just before high water; the visibility often improves as the cleaner Channel water pushes in.
