GEFION (POSSIBLY) - Cornwall & Devon

The Gefion, likely, sits upright at 38 metres off Berry Head, a proper steamship wreck from 1917. We’ve always had a soft spot for these older wrecks; they just have a different feel to them. You drop down, and the whole outline of the ship is there, often shrouded in that moody Devon green. The stern is our favourite part, usually a bit more intact, with the prop shaft leading down. It’s a dive for those who appreciate the history as much as the structure itself. Visibility here is typical for the English Channel, rarely gin-clear, but often 5-10 metres, enough to pick out the details. We’ve seen conger eels poking out from plates and bib enjoying the shelter. The coal cargo has long since scattered, but the holds are still discernible, home to crabs and lobsters. It’s a good choice for experienced wreck divers comfortable with depth and who don't mind a bit of a current. Dive on a slack tide, and you’ll have the best chance to really explore her.
