GULL (POSSIBLY) - Cornwall & Devon

The Gull, or what we believe is the Gull, offers a compelling dive into maritime history, though it's certainly one for the experienced wreck diver. Sitting at 57 metres, this isn't a casual dip; we’re talking about proper technical diving. What we love about this site is the sheer mystery and the chance to connect with a vessel lost nearly a century ago. Built of wood in 1920, the wreck is surprisingly intact, considering its age and the collision that sent it down in 1925. Dropping down, the visibility in this part of the Channel can be hit-or-miss, but on a good day, the dark timbers of the Gull emerge from the gloom, looking almost ghostly. You can trace the outline of her 34.9-metre hull, imagining her final voyage from Fowey to Stockholm. We always find ourselves drawn to the bow section; the way the structure gives shelter means you’ll often find conger eels peering from gaps, their heads thick as your arm. The wooden hull provides plenty of nooks and crannies for squat lobsters and crabs, and the deeper sections are often dusted with a surprising amount of plumose anemones, their white plumes swaying gently in the subtle currents. This is a dive for those who appreciate the narrative of a wreck, the quiet exploration of history, and the challenge of depth.
