HALTON - Cornwall & Devon

We've spent a fair few hours finning around the Halton, and frankly, it's one of those sites that just makes us smile. This isn't a deep dive, peaking at a mere two metres, so it’s perfect for a long, relaxed exploration, especially for those newer to wreck diving or just looking for a chilled-out fin. She’s a dangerous wreck by official classification, but don’t let that put you off; what it really means is she’s broken up, scattered across the seabed, and utterly magnificent for it. What you get here is a real sense of history, but also a fantastic example of how nature reclaims things. We love picking our way through the scattered ribs and plating, imagining the ship's original form. Keep an eye out for the resident crabs scuttling amongst the wreckage and the small schools of blennies darting in and out of every nook and cranny. Our favourite part has to be the way the light filters through the shallow water, illuminating the rust-coloured metal and the green algae growing on it. It’s a sensory experience, feeling the gentle surge, seeing the light dance, and getting up close with a piece of maritime past. Dive at high tide for the best visibility and a slightly calmer experience.
