HEROINE (POSSIBLY) - Cornwall & Devon

The Heroine, or what we *think* is the Heroine, is a proper old girl, sunk back in 1882. It's not a deep dive at all, barely six metres, which means plenty of bottom time for a good rummage around. We love poking through the scattered remains of her wooden hull, seeing the ribs splayed out on the seabed like a forgotten skeleton. You can often make out the sturdy iron fastenings that once held her together, now serving as anchors for plumose anemones swaying gently in the surge. Because it’s so shallow, the light here can be fantastic on a clear day, illuminating the kelp forests that have taken root around the wreck. We've spent ages just watching wrasse dart between the planks and spotting squat lobsters tucked into crevices. It's a dive that rewards slow exploration, a perfect site for photographers wanting to capture the blend of history and marine growth. Just watch for the swell if there’s any west in it, as the Lundy Island corner can get a bit lively.
