HMMS 1019 - Cornwall & Devon

The HMMS 1019, a minesweeper sunk by a mine in 1944, gives you that proper wartime history hit. We’ve always been drawn to wrecks with a story, and this one, sitting at 22 metres, has a compelling one. She’s not intact in the way some deeper wrecks are; the mine blast did a number on her, leaving her quite broken up. But that just means more nooks and crannies for the resident conger eels and lobsters to hide in. It’s an excellent dive for those who appreciate the sheer grit of history and don't mind a bit of a rummage through structure. Visibility can swing here; on a good day, you'll see the full profile of her scattered remains, silhouetted against the emerald light. We love picking our way through the bent metal plates, imagining the chaos of her final moments. Our favourite spots are often where the deck plating has peeled back, creating sheltered overhangs absolutely crammed with plumose anemones and dead man’s fingers. Bring a good torch and take your time; the smaller details, like the encrusted portholes and the odd piece of machinery, really make this wreck sing.
