HMS Beagle - Cornwall & Devon

Forget the name you think you know. The HMS Beagle in Cornwall isn’t Darwin’s famous survey ship, but a Cherokee-class brig-sloop that met its end much closer to home in 1820. For us, that distinction makes it even more interesting – a genuine slice of naval history right off the UK coast, less about exploration and more about the tough reality of maritime life back then. Dropping down, the first thing you notice is the way the wreck has settled, largely intact despite the years. The wooden hull is, of course, long gone, but the ballast stones and some iron fittings sketch out the ship’s footprint on the seabed. It’s a real history lesson unfolding before you. We’ve had some cracking dives here, navigating through the ribs and feeling the chill of the Atlantic deep, even in summer. Look closely, and you’ll spot wrasse darting through the skeletal remains, often a fat conger eel eyeing you from a shadowy nook. It’s not a site for deep penetration, but you can certainly spend a good hour tracing the ship’s outline, imagining life on board two centuries ago. Our favourite dives here are on a slack tide, when the visibility often pushes to 10 metres, allowing the scale of the wreck to truly emerge. It’s a dive for those who appreciate maritime heritage, a quiet reflection on a vessel lost to the Channel’s unpredictable temper.
