IKEDA (POSSIBLY) - Cornwall & Devon

The Ikeda, what a moody beast of a wreck. We love a dive that makes you feel like you’re stepping back in time, and this old steamship delivers. Lying at 22 metres, she’s broken but still very much recognisable as a ship, torpedoed by UB-40 back in 1918. You can feel the history down there, a real sense of a moment frozen. Visibility can be a proper Cornish lottery, but when it’s good, the sheer scale of the Ikeda is impressive. We usually drop onto the bow, which is still quite intact, and you can swim through some of the holds. Look for resident conger eels, proper thick ones, tucked into every nook and cranny. Dogfish often rest on the sand nearby, and we’ve seen some decent pollack shoals hanging off the superstructure. It’s a dive for those who appreciate the story as much as the scenery, and who don’t mind a bit of a current if it means exploring a piece of maritime history.
