JOHANN CARL - Cornwall & Devon

The *Johann Carl* isn't about depth or pristine reefs; it’s a living history lesson, right there in the shallows. We love a good accessible wreck, and this 1917 sailing vessel delivers on character. You’ll find her broken up but still recognisable, with ribs and planks scattered across the seabed like forgotten bones. It’s an ideal spot for newer divers, or anyone who just wants a relaxed bimble without worrying about deco stops. We’ve seen schools of juvenile pollock darting through the structure, and it’s a brilliant place to spot flatfish half-buried in the sand. The light plays beautifully through the water, illuminating the rust-coloured timbers and the green algae that now coats them. Our best tip? Go on a calm day, ideally around slack tide, to really appreciate the visibility and poke around without a strong current nudging you along. It's a proper wreck experience, just without the deep dive commitment.
