KROMWYK - Cornwall & Devon

The Kromwyk, a converted Rhine barge sunk by RAF Whirlwinds in 1942, sits in a very modest 20 metres. We love this wreck for its accessibility and how much history you can literally put your hand on. It's a proper piece of World War II, a bit broken up but still very much a ship. You'll find it well-colonised by plumose anemones, their white tentacles swaying with the gentle surge, and lobsters often peer out from under steel plates. We think the Kromwyk is perfect for newer wreck divers or those looking for a relaxed dive with a real sense of place. Expect to see plenty of pollack darting through the superstructure, and look closely for blennies tucked into crevices. The visibility here can be hit-or-miss, so we always check the tides – slack water on a neap tide usually gives you the best chance to really soak it all in. It’s a comfortable dive, letting you take your time exploring what’s left of her cargo holds and deck machinery without feeling rushed.
