KWESTER - Cornwall & Devon

The Kwester, a small steel fishing vessel, met its end south of Dodman Point in 1994. Now, she rests upright in a mere 4 metres of water, making her a perfect easy dive when the conditions are right. We love hitting this site on a calm summer’s day, usually as a second dive after something deeper, or for a leisurely potter with a camera. Visibility can be hit or miss in the English Channel, but catch the Kwester on a good day and you’ll see her entire 9.8-metre length laid out beneath you. She’s small enough to circumnavigate a few times, discovering details with each pass. The deckhouse is largely intact, with bits of deck gear still recognisable. Look closely, and you’ll spot plumose anemones clinging to every surface, their white tentacles swaying gently in the subtle surge. Conger eels sometimes lurk in the shadowed nooks, and we’ve often found dogfish eggs tangled in the snags of old fishing net. This isn't a wreck for penetration, but it's brilliant for photographers seeking atmospheric shots of a colonised, shallow wreck. It suits divers looking for a relaxed exploration rather than a deep challenge.
