LA BAJOLE - Cornwall & Devon

La Bajole is one of our favourite wreck dives off the Cornish coast, a wooden trawler that went down in ’74 after a run-in with a German freighter. She’s deep, sitting at 38 metres, so this one's for the experienced diver, no doubt. But for those who make the descent, it’s a proper dive. Even though she’s timber, there’s still plenty of structure to poke around, with her hull sections creating sheltered pockets. We’ve often found conger eels tucked into the deeper parts, their heads poking out from the gloom. The real magic happens when you get close; the wood is absolutely covered in jewel anemones, the colours just pop against the grey of the seabed, especially when your torch beam hits them. You’ll see pollack flitting around the rigging, and there’s usually a resident cuckoo wrasse or two darting in and out. It’s a quiet wreck, not often dived due to its depth and location, so you often have her all to yourself. We’d suggest going on a slack tide, the currents can be quite lively out there.
