LA CYGOGNE - Cornwall & Devon

La Cygogne, a 16m fishing vessel, isn’t some ancient war prize, but a modern wreck with a story. She sank in 2013 after a fire, and we love how quickly nature has claimed her. Lying at 52 metres, this one’s for the experienced technical diver, and it offers a surprisingly intricate delve for its size. Dropping down, the first thing you notice is the way the light fades, giving the wreck a truly eerie presence. We usually find the wheelhouse offers the most interesting penetration; you can still make out gauges and controls, frozen in time. Shoals of bib and pouting dart through the hull, and we’ve often spotted conger eels tucked into the darker corners. The prop is always a highlight, usually encrusted with plumose anemones, their white tentacles waving gently in the mild current. It’s a proper expedition, and while it lacks the grand scale of bigger wrecks, its intact nature and quick colonisation make it one of our favourite tech dives in the area.
