LA NEFTHIS - Cornwall & Devon

La Nefthis, a French fishing vessel, went down in 1976 after a run-in with the breakwater in Cherbourg. Now she sits upright in about 18 metres of water, a short boat ride from Plymouth. We love her because she’s so intact for a wooden wreck. You can still make out the bow, stern, and the general outline of the wheelhouse. Our favourite part has to be the deck machinery, all draped in a thick carpet of plumose anemones. It feels like swimming through a ghostly garden. Look closely inside the holds and you’ll often spot conger eels tucked away, sometimes one or two sharing a space. It’s a great site for newer wreck divers looking to get a feel for penetration, with plenty of entry points into the bigger sections. Just keep an eye on the current here, it can pick up quickly, especially around tide changes, making the swim a bit of a workout. We’d suggest going on a slack tide for the most relaxed exploration.
