LAKE EDEN (POSSIBLY) - Cornwall & Devon

Lake Eden is a properly moody wreck dive, the kind that sticks with you long after you’ve toweled off. This steamship went down in 1918, a torpedo victim, and now rests upright in around 35m of water. It’s a big girl, 76 metres of maritime history, and the sheer scale of her on the sonar is always exciting. Dropping down, the visibility often plays hide and seek, but when it opens up, you see the structure rise from the gloom, draped in fishing nets and anemones. We love finning along the deck, imagining the final moments, the bow section still remarkably intact. Our favourite part is peeking into the cargo holds, where conger eels have set up shop – you often spot their heads poking out from the darkness. The whole wreck is a lattice of life now, a haven for crabs and lobsters, with schools of pollack often circling above the bridge. It’s a dive for those who appreciate history and don’t mind a bit of a current; when it's running, it can make for an exhilarating drift along the hull. Come prepared for typical UK diving conditions, and Lake Eden delivers a genuinely atmospheric experience.
