LAURA C ANDERSON (POSSIBLY) - Cornwall & Devon

The LAURA C ANDERSON (POSSIBLY) wreck is one of those deep dives where the story almost outweighs the dive itself. Plunging to 48 metres, it’s a site for experienced divers, no question, and a twinset is definitely our recommendation here. The visibility can be hit or miss, typical for this part of the Channel, but on a good day, when the light penetrates, the sheer scale of the wreck starts to reveal itself. We love the mystery surrounding this site. Was it definitely the Laura C. Anderson, the sailing vessel captured and sunk by a German submarine in 1917? The ‘(Possibly)’ just adds to the intrigue, turning every dive into a bit of an archaeological exploration. What you’ll find is a fragmented but substantial wreck, well-colonised by life, not a pristine ship, but a true historical artefact. Schools of pollock often swirl around the broken decking, and we’ve seen some hefty conger eels tucked into the deeper sections of the hull. It’s a dive that rewards patience and a keen eye for detail, bringing a piece of wartime history into sharp focus, even if the true identity remains a talking point back on the boat.
