LCI(L)99 - Cornwall & Devon

The LCI(L)99, a WWII landing craft, sits upright at 44 meters, a quiet testament to Operation Neptune. We love how intact she is, especially the bow ramp, still poised as if ready to discharge her cargo onto some unseen beach. Dropping onto the bridge area, you’ll often find conger eels peering from every dark recess, their thick bodies weaving through the twisted metal. The real draw here is the sense of history; you can almost picture the soldiers packed inside on that fateful day in 1944. Penetration is possible for experienced wreck divers, though we always suggest exercising caution given the age and depth. Visibility can vary wildly, but on a good day, the light filtering down to the deck highlights the schools of bib and pollack darting between the girders. We always try to time our dives for slack water, about an hour after high or low tide, to avoid the notorious Channel currents. It’s a deep dive, definitely one for those comfortable with deco, but the rewards are an immersive journey into a pivotal moment in history.
