LCT 2331 (PROBABLY) - Cornwall & Devon

The LCT 2331 (PROBABLY) is a deep dive, a serious one at 51 metres, but for technical divers, it’s a proper piece of history on the seabed. This isn’t a pretty wreck, it’s a workhorse of a landing craft, an ex-USN vessel sunk by gunfire after attempts to tow her failed in a storm back in ‘44. She’s broken, snapped across her midsection, which actually makes for some interesting swim-throughs if you’re careful and well-practised in overhead environments. We love the sheer scale of the LCT, a 34-metre hull now well-colonised by life. You’ll find plenty of conger eels making their homes in the deeper sections, their heads poking out from twisted metal plates. Our favourite part is navigating the cargo deck, imagining the D-Day cargo she might have carried. Visibility here can be hit-and-miss, typical for the English Channel, but when it’s good, the natural light filtering down creates a surprisingly atmospheric scene. Best dived on slack water, naturally, as currents can be fierce. This dive suits experienced technical divers who appreciate maritime history and don’t mind a bit of a challenge.
