LCT 244 - Cornwall & Devon

The LCT 244 in Salcombe is one of our absolute favourite south coast dives when the conditions align. You’re dropping onto a WWII Landing Craft Tank, 58.5 metres long, sitting perfectly upright in just 12 metres of water. It’s a proper piece of history, probably lost during Operation Neptune, and she’s now well-colonised. We love finning along the deck, picking out the skeletal remains of the superstructure, and imagining the scene back in 1944. The wreck is a haven for spider crabs – they are everywhere, scuttling amongst the plates. We’ve also seen plenty of dogfish nestled in the sand just off the wreck, and the odd conger eel peeking from deeper sections. Visibility here can be a bit hit or miss, but on a good day, with a decent slack tide, it’s a truly atmospheric dive. It’s shallow enough for longer bottom times, making it great for newer wreck divers or photographers wanting to spend time exploring the details. Just make sure to time your dive around slack water; the currents can be lively.
