MARGUERITE - Cornwall & Devon

There are plenty of wrecks around the Cornish coast, but the Marguerite holds a special place for us. She’s a decent size, just shy of 80 metres, and lies upright at 30 metres, which is a comfortable depth for most experienced divers. Sunk by a German submarine in 1917, she’s been down there long enough for marine life to really make itself at home. We love dropping onto her bow, often finding conger eels lurking in the deeper holds, their heads poking out like grumpy old men. Swim along the deck and you’ll pass through schools of pollack, sometimes so thick they make the light ripple. The stern is our favourite spot; the propeller is usually still clearly visible, a dark silhouette against the murkier green water, and there are often lobsters tucked into any available crevice. Visibility can be a bit hit or miss, typical for the UK, but on a good day, when the sun filters through, the wreck takes on an almost ghostly appearance. It’s a proper dive, one where you need to be comfortable with depth and sometimes a bit of current, but the reward is a tangible piece of history absolutely buzzing with life.
