MARIE ANGER - Cornwall & Devon

Okay, the *Marie Anger*. Now, you’re not coming here for a pristine shipwreck experience, let’s be clear. This is for the wreck detectives, the history buffs who love a challenge, and anyone who appreciates how the ocean reclaims its own. We’re talking about the distributed remains of a French trader, gone since 1836, scattered across the southwest side of Hermitage Rock. What you'll find here is less a coherent wreck and more a puzzle of history and natural growth. Think iron ribs emerging from the seabed, maybe some timbers half-buried, all heavily encrusted. The beauty is in the life that’s colonised it – dense carpets of jewel anemones, nudibranchs hunting among the debris, and often, some surprisingly large crabs tucked into any available crevice. It’s a site that demands a slow pace, a keen eye, and an appreciation for the subtle drama of the underwater world. Our favourite approach is to pick a section, really scour it, and see what stories the seabed whispers. It’s not for checking off a big wreck, but it’s fantastic for a relaxed potter, perhaps as a second dive, where you can really slow down and appreciate the intricate details of the reef and its historical additions.
