MAYFLOWER (POSSIBLY) - Cornwall & Devon

The *Mayflower*, we think, is one of those wrecks that really grabs you, even if the visibility plays its usual Cornish tricks. She was torpedoed in 1918, and you can still sense the drama of that day when you drop down onto her. We’ve found her at 20 metres, lying broken but still clearly a fishing vessel, with those tell-tale shapes of bow and stern emerging from the gloom. What makes her special? It’s the atmosphere. The wreck itself is heavily colonised, a proper metal reef, so you’ll find plenty of plumose anemones, dead man's fingers, and nudibranchs clinging to the plates. We’ve often seen conger eels poking out from the bigger gaps, and the shoals of pollack and bib can be dense enough to make you feel like you're diving through a silver curtain. This is a dive for wreck enthusiasts who appreciate history and don't mind a bit of a treasure hunt to piece together the wreck's story amongst the kelp and currents. Keep an eye on the slack water times; that’s when you’ll get the most out of her.
