MONTE GURUGU (POSSIBLY) - Cornwall & Devon

The *Monte Gurugu* is one of those wrecks that just grabs you, even before you drop in. She was a steamship, sunk by a mine in 1917, and now she sits upright in 43 metres, which means this isn't one for a quick splash. We love that she's so intact; you can still make out the bow, her stern, and the engine room. It’s not a site for the faint of heart or the inexperienced, with that depth, but for technical divers or those comfortable with deeper decompression dives, she’s a real treat. Dropping down, the first thing you notice is the way the light filters, even on a sunny day. It's dimmer down there, but the visibility, often a good 10-15 metres, lets you appreciate her scale. We've spent hours just finning around the superstructure, spotting conger eels tucked into every crevice, their heads peeking out, watching you pass. The wreck itself has become a giant artificial reef, covered in jewel anemones, hydroids, and dead man’s fingers. You'll see shoals of pollack swirling above her decks, and every now and then, a dogfish will glide past. Exploring the *Monte Gurugu* feels like stepping back in time; it's a dive that rewards patience and a keen eye for detail. Book this one with a good tide, and try for a slack water slot for the best experience.
