MORNING STAR - Cornwall & Devon

The Morning Star, a relic from the First World War, sits upright in around 36 metres of water, offering a genuinely atmospheric dive. We love this wreck for its story and its surprising intactness, considering it was scuttled by a German U-boat in 1917. You’ll find the bow section particularly impressive, with anchor chains still draped over the forecastle. Drop down and you're immediately struck by the scale; it's a good-sized cargo vessel, now well-colonised. Conger eels are a common sight peeking from crevices, and the deck plates are often carpeted with jewel anemones, adding flashes of colour to the monochrome steel. Look closely and you'll spot scorpion fish camouflaged against the encrusted metalwork. Our favourite part is navigating the holds, if conditions allow, where the light filters down eerily. This dive suits experienced wreck divers comfortable with depth and potentially limited visibility, as Cornwall's waters can be temperamental. Pick a calm day with good tidal conditions, and you’ll get the best out of this piece of history.
