PEDAR HOAR - Cornwall & Devon

Pedar Hoar isn’t about grand architecture or deep exploration. It’s a shallow, scattered wreck, and that’s precisely its charm. This old ketch caught fire and went down in 1911, leaving behind a jigsaw puzzle of timbers and plating that’s now thoroughly reclaimed by the sea. You’re diving in a couple of metres of water here, sometimes less. It’s more of a snorkel or a very relaxed dive when conditions are calm. We love pulling on a drysuit and just drifting over the remaining hull sections, picking out the brass fittings that still peek through the kelp. The light plays beautifully through the water, illuminating schools of pollack that dart between the ribs. We’ve spent hours just watching blennies guard their territories on the barnacle-encrusted wood. It’s a gentle site, perfect for photographers keen on macro life or those just wanting a peaceful dip into history without the nitrogen narcosis. Our favourite time is a quiet morning, just after high tide, when the water is clearest and the current minimal.
