Why dive here
With 176+ marine species recorded in the area - including blue sharks, dolphins, dwarf minke whales, humpback whales and ocean sunfish (mola mola) - QUAIL offers some of Cornwall & Devon's richest wreck diving. Water ranges 10-18°C, warmest July, August, September.
Dropping onto the Quail, you’re hitting a piece of Cornish maritime history. This steamship went down after a collision in 1886, now resting at 36 metres. We usually find the wreck pretty broken up, but you can still pick out the bow and stern sections, with parts of the hull plating scattered around. It’s home to plenty of wrasse and conger eels, tucked into the twisted metalwork. The visibility can be variable here, but on a good day, it’s a compelling, deep dive for those with some wreck experience.
