RAMPAGER - Cornwall & Devon

The *Rampager* isn’t a grand, cathedral-like wreck, but we love it for its sheer character and accessibility. This little fishing vessel, just 8.5 metres long, went down in 1984, so it’s had plenty of time to really settle into its sandy perch at a shallow 8 metres. What you get here is a remarkably intact, albeit small, wreck that’s perfect for a relaxed dive, especially if the weather’s a bit choppy elsewhere. We’ve spent hours poking around the wheelhouse, which is still remarkably defined. Look for the glint of light through the portholes and the way the kelp fronds sway around the mast. The decks are home to velvet swimming crabs, their eyes peeking out from under rusted plates, and if you get in close, you’ll spot tiny blennies darting into crevices. Our favourite part? The way the light filters through the structure on a sunny day, painting shifting patterns on the seabed. It’s a great site for photographers wanting to practice composition, or for anyone who just wants to enjoy a gentle potter around a proper piece of history. Just keep an eye on the tides; slack water makes for the calmest exploration.
