RAUMBOAT NO.41 - Cornwall & Devon

The Raumboot No.41, a German minesweeper sunk by a British MTB in 1942, sits upright at 24 metres. We love an upright wreck, it just feels more like a ship than a pile of scrap. The bow is particularly intact, still looking ship-like even after all these years, but it's the stern that holds our favourite spots. We'd suggest poking around the deck where the gun mounting would have been. You’ll find some massive spider crabs hiding in the shadows there, almost camouflaged against the dark metal. Visibility here can be a bit variable, as it often is in British waters, but on a good day, the light filters through the green water and really highlights the profusion of plumose anemones coating the upper works. They wave gently in the surge, making the wreck look almost fuzzy. The wreck isn't huge, only 37.8 metres long, so you can easily explore its full length on a single dive. It's an ideal site for those who appreciate military history and the way the sea reclaims these structures.
