REINDEER - Cornwall & Devon

The Reindeer is a proper Cornish wreck, sitting upright in 31 metres. We think she's a fantastic dive when the conditions play ball. Dropping down, the stern is often the first thing you see, a dark shape materialising from the green. Her story is a swift one – she went down in 1907 after a collision, and it’s clear she settled quickly and relatively intact. What we love here is the way the wreck holds the marine life. Conger eels are always lurking in the deeper parts of the holds, their heads poking out of gaps in the plating. Look for spider crabs, too, scuttling across the deck plates. The forward section is pretty broken up, but you can still make out the bow, often home to decent-sized pollack darting through the structure. Visibility can be a bit of a lottery, so we always check the forecast for a good neap tide and light winds. Catch it right, and the light filtering down into the wreck feels almost ethereal. This is a dive for experienced wreck enthusiasts who appreciate history and don't mind a bit of a challenge.
