SURDELO - Cornwall & Devon

The Surdelo, a 15-metre fishing vessel that ran aground in 1972, lies just off Hook Sand near the entrance to Poole Harbour. What we’ve got here is a shallow wreck, sitting at a maximum depth of 3 metres, which makes it perfect for a leisurely snorkel or a really easy first wreck dive if you're keen to get a feel for things. It’s fairly broken up these days, but you can still make out the general shape of the hull, and we often find various crabs and smaller fish sheltering among the plates. The lack of depth also means decent light penetration on a clear day, which really brings out the colours of the kelp and anemones that have settled on the remains. If you're after a dramatic, intact wreck, this isn't it, but it’s a charming, accessible dive for a relaxed afternoon.
