U 413 (POSSIBLY) - Cornwall & Devon

The U-413, or what we strongly suspect is the U-413, sits deep off the Cornish coast. Dropping down to 54 metres, this is definitely one for the experienced trimix divers among us. The dive is a real journey into history. We've spent time tracing the remains of the conning tower, imagining the chaos of that August day in 1944. The wreck itself is remarkably intact for a vessel that met such a violent end. You can still make out the torpedo tubes at the bow, often home to a skulking conger eel or two. Further along the deck, the plating has peeled back in places, revealing the internal structure like an x-ray. It’s a somber experience, knowing 45 men went down with her. The dive is often a quiet one, with only the hum of your rebreather for company. Visibility can be hit or miss, but on a good day, the sheer scale of the U-boat is impressive. We love drifting along the length, seeing the fishing nets draped like ghostly shrouds, and the plumose anemones waving from every surface. Best dived on a slack tide, obviously, but even then, expect a bit of a workout getting to the shotline.
