USS CORRY - Cornwall & Devon

Diving the USS Corry isn’t just about seeing metal on the seabed, it’s a dive into D-Day history. We love that it’s still very much a ship, not just a pile of scrap, even though she was mined off Utah Beach in 1944. At 16 metres, it’s a comfortable depth for extended bottom times, letting you properly explore her 106-metre length. You’ll find her mostly intact, lying on her port side. We always make a point of heading for the bow where the damage from the mine is still incredibly clear – twisted steel and ruptured plates that tell a visceral story of that fateful day. Swim along her deck and you’ll pass various gun mounts, now heavily encrusted with plumose anemones, their white tentacles swaying gently in the mild current. Shoals of bib dart in and out of the darker spaces, and conger eels are often spotted peeking from behind bulkheads. Visibility can be a bit hit or miss, typical of the channel, but on a good day, the Corry reveals her secrets with an almost eerie clarity. We’d suggest going at slack tide for the easiest dive, as currents can pick up. It's a dive that truly resonates, a powerful connection to the past, and excellent for any diver with an appreciation for maritime history.
