WESTON MAID (POSSIBLY) - Cornwall & Devon

Let's be upfront, the Weston Maid is a bit of a mystery, hence the 'possibly' in the name. We're talking about a scattered wreck, likely a barge, resting at a comfortable 15 metres. It’s perfect for a relaxed rummage, especially if you appreciate the archaeology of the seabed over a big, intact hull. What we love about it is the way it’s been completely adopted by the local inhabitants. You’ll find its broken sections spread across the seafloor, each piece a little reef in itself. We've often seen spider crabs scuttling over the plates, and the cracks in the metalwork are prime real estate for dogfish. Look closely, and you might spot a grumpy conger eel peering out from beneath a collapsed section. The visibility here can be classic Cornish, meaning it changes with the tide, but on a good day, the dappled light filtering down really highlights the encrusting sponges and anemones. It’s a gentle dive, suited to anyone happy to spend time poking around a less-defined structure, imagining the life it once had. Our favourite time to visit is on a slack tide, giving you maximum time to explore the debris field without fighting a push.
