Wreck of SMS Grosser Kurfürst - Cornwall & Devon

Diving the SMS Grosser Kurfürst is a proper journey back in time, and one we always recommend to divers who appreciate history mixed with a good dose of marine life. This isn't some pristine, intact wreck sitting upright. Oh no. She's broken up, scattered across the seabed at a depth that's comfortably within recreational limits, usually around 20-30 metres, depending on the tide and where you drop. What we love about the Kurfürst is the scale of the wreckage. You're not just looking at a few bits of metal; you're navigating through enormous sections of hull plates, massive beams, and what feels like entire engine components. It’s a vast debris field. Sunlight filters through the kelp, dappling the rusty ironwork, and the ambient noise is just the creak of your gear and the distant thrum of the current. It feels wild, untamed. Look closely and you'll spot conger eels in every nook and cranny, their heads poking out from under plates, sometimes surprisingly large. Crabs scuttle across the metal, and we’ve seen some decent lobsters here too. Visibility can be hit or miss, typical for the UK, but on a good day, when the water clears, the sheer size of the wreck is impressive. We'd suggest timing your dive for slack water to truly appreciate the site; the currents around here can be strong. It's a dive that rewards careful exploration, not just a quick swim-through.
