DEFIANCE - Scottish West Coast

The Defiance is one of our favourite small wrecks on the Scottish West Coast, a classic for a reason. She’s an 8.8m fishing vessel, gone down in 1993, now sitting upright and mostly intact on a silty seabed at 31m. What we love about her is how much character a wreck this size retains. You can peek into the wheelhouse, imagine the skipper at the helm, and the deck area is just begging for a careful exploration. Visibility here can be a bit variable, but on a good day, the light filtering down gives the whole scene a moody, atmospheric glow, especially with the resident wrasse and squat lobsters making themselves at home amongst the rusted metal. We’d suggest a strong torch; it really brings out the colours on the encrusting sponges and anemones. She’s a great dive for anyone with a bit of wreck experience looking for something a little different from the usual large trawlers. Dive her slowly, take your time, and you’ll find the Defiance tells a great story.
