GIRONA - Scottish West Coast

Diving the Girona isn't about huge intact sections of ship, but rather a scatter of history. We love it for the sheer weight of what it represents – a Spanish Armada galleass, lost in 1588. At only 8m, it’s a shallow dive, perfectly accessible, but don't expect a typical wreck penetration. Instead, you’ll find a debris field of what was once a grand vessel, spread across the rocky seabed. The real thrill here is in the treasure hunt, literally. Gold chains, cannons, and coins have been recovered over the years, though these days it’s more about imagining the past. Look for the way the remaining timbers have become part of the reef, providing shelter for crabs and wrasse. The low light often filtering through the Scottish waters gives the whole site an atmospheric, almost reverent feel. We’d suggest going at slack tide; even at this depth, currents can pick up around the headland. It’s a dive for those who appreciate history as much as marine life, a contemplative exploration rather than a thrill ride.
