HMS Vandal - Scottish West Coast

The HMS Vandal, a U-class submarine lost in 1943, sits upright and largely intact on the seabed off the Scottish West Coast. We love how the clear, cold water often provides excellent visibility, letting you really appreciate the scale of this wartime relic. As you descend, the conning tower emerges from the gloom first, often swathed in a cloud of small pollack. We’d suggest taking your time to explore the deck, looking for the torpedo tubes and the subtle signs of marine growth taking hold – soft corals and anemones cling to the metal, adding splashes of colour to the grey steel. It’s a dive that rewards patient exploration, especially for those with an interest in naval history. Watch out for the resident wrasse patrolling the nooks and crannies. This is a dive for experienced wreck divers comfortable with colder water and potentially strong currents, but the reward is a tangible piece of history.
