KAFFIR - Scottish West Coast

The Kaffir is just plain fun. We love a wreck with a good story, and a steamship taken from Ayr Harbour by unauthorised persons definitely qualifies. At 20 meters, she’s not huge, but she’s remarkably intact for a vessel that’s been down since 1974. We’ve finned through the hold, imagining her cargo, and peered into the small engine room, where the machinery is still recognisable, encrusted with anemones. The real draw here, besides the history, is the way the local marine life has utterly taken over. Ling often lurk in the shadowed corners of the hull, and we’ve spotted plenty of inquisitive wrasse darting between the rusty plates. Look closely, and you’ll find nudibranchs crawling over the decking. It's a proper adventure dive, a chance to explore a piece of maritime mischief. She sits in pretty sheltered water, so it's a good one when the exposed sites are blowing out.
