NORTHERN VENTURE - Scottish West Coast

The *Northern Venture* isn't one of those massive warships that demand multiple dives to see everything. No, this is a fishing boat, 16.5 metres long, sunk on New Year's Eve in 1993. It’s a proper expedition, though, getting out to her, often involving a good boat ride across some lively Scottish water, but it's always worth it. We love how intact she remains. Her wheelhouse is still there, and you can peer into the holds, often finding a resident conger eel or two staring back. Down at 60 metres, it’s a serious deep dive, requiring proper planning and gas management. But for those with the training, it’s a brilliant technical wreck. The structure itself is coated in plumose anemones, their white tentacles swaying gently in the dim light, and we’ve often seen huge shoals of juvenile pollock using the wreck for shelter. The conditions can be challenging, though; visibility here is famously changeable, so pick your day carefully, ideally after a long spell of settled weather.
