Wreck of Bute I - Scottish West Coast

The Wreck of Bute I isn't about tropical colours or balmy water. This is proper Scottish diving, and we love it for its moody atmosphere and surprising finds. Descending onto the Bute I feels like stepping back in time, the timbers of this old paddle steamer still holding their shape despite the decades underwater. You’ll weave through the skeletal remains of her deck, often shrouded in a fine layer of silty gloom that just adds to the drama. Keep an eye out for the resident conger eels, they’re big here and seem to eye you suspiciously from their hidey-holes. This dive is definitely for those who appreciate history and the quiet beauty of northern waters, not for divers chasing sun-drenched reefs. The best diving here comes on calm days with minimal swell, giving you a chance to truly appreciate the wreck's structure before the current picks up. We’d suggest a strong torch; it really brings out the detail in the wood and helps spot the crabs clinging to the wreckage.
