Wreck of Challenge - Scottish West Coast

The Wreck of Challenge isn't your usual postcard dive, and that's exactly why we love it. Off the Scottish West Coast, this isn't about tropical fish and sun-drenched reefs. Instead, you're dropping into history, a tangible connection to the rough seas and the fishing industry that shaped these shores. We've always found something profoundly moving about these cold water wrecks. The Challenge, a fishing trawler, settled upright on the seabed and still largely intact. Descending onto her decks, you’ll start to pick out details through the green light. The winch gear is still there, and the general outline of the superstructure is clear. We’ve poked around the wheelhouse, imagining the last moments, though penetration is really only for the properly trained and equipped given the silty conditions. But what really makes it for us is the life that’s claimed her. Squat lobsters lurk in every crevice, big velvet swimming crabs scuttle across the plating, and huge conger eels peer out from darker holes. It's a deep dive, often with a bit of current, so it definitely suits experienced cold-water wreck enthusiasts who appreciate the atmosphere over bright colours. Our best dives here have always been on a slack tide, with a good torch, taking our time to really soak it all in.
