The Wreck of the Crane is one of those sites that just *feels* Scottish, in the best possible way. We love how moody it can be, sitting on the seabed often with that low, ethereal visibility that makes the wreck loom out of the gloom. It’s a trawler, a working boat, so you don’t get the grand scale of a freighter, but what you do get is character. Exploring the Crane, you’re often finning through shoals of saithe and pollock, sometimes so thick they part around you like a living curtain. Our favourite moments are pushing into the wheelhouse, feeling the silence, seeing the outlines of old equipment, now completely encrusted with dead man's fingers and anemones. The kelp sways overhead, creating these dappled light effects if the sun breaks through, and it’s a brilliant spot for spotting blennies tucked into crevices or the occasional dogfish patrolling the sand nearby. This site really suits divers who appreciate history and an atmospheric dive over bright colours, and it’s a great example of how nature reclaims what we leave behind. Just be prepared for cooler water and pack a good torch; it’s essential for bringing out the colours on the wreck.
