Wreck of Essex - Scottish West Coast

The Essex isn’t just a pile of metal; it’s a time capsule lying in Scotland's chill embrace. We love dropping onto the stern, watching the bow disappear into the gloom, a proper exploration dive. The ship’s superstructure is still largely intact, a skeletal frame inviting you in, and we'd suggest exploring the engine room. Keep an eye out for the resident conger eels, they’re massive here, like something from a monster movie, often peeking out from behind collapsed plating. This is a dive for the more experienced wreck enthusiast, those comfortable with deeper dives and the often-moody visibility of Scottish waters. The real beauty of the Essex is its sense of history, the way the cold water preserves it, making you feel like you’re the first to find it. It's a deep dive, usually around 40-50 metres, so proper planning and gas management are essential. Our favourite time to dive it is late summer when the light penetrates a little further.
