Why dive here
With 112+ marine species recorded in the area - including blue whales, dolphins, dwarf minke whales, humpback whales and ocean sunfish (mola mola) - Wreck of Fanny (Possibly) offers some of Scottish West Coast's richest wreck diving.
Diving the Fanny (or what we strongly suspect is her) off Scotland’s west coast isn’t about tropical colours. It’s about history, cold water, and the incredible way the ocean reclaims its own. We’ve done this dive when the sun slices through the plankton, illuminating the dark timbers, and also in gloomier conditions where the wreck feels even more like a ghost. You’ll descend into that distinct green-blue light, often with a slight chill that reminds you exactly where you are. What you find is a wooden hull, well-preserved in the cold water, resting on a silty bottom. It’s not a dramatic upright structure, more of an archaeological treasure spread across the seabed. Look for the ribs of the ship, the curvature of the hull still evident. Ling and conger eels often lurk in the deeper sections, their heads poking out from beneath the timbers. We always enjoy spotting the nudibranchs, tiny bursts of unexpected colour against the dark wood. This dive suits divers who appreciate history and the unique beauty of cold water wrecks, not those looking for a brightly lit coral show. Our favourite tip? Bring a good torch, even on a sunny day. It really helps bring out the details.
