Wreck of Girl Sandra - Scottish West Coast

The Girl Sandra. Ah, she’s a proper Scottish wreck, sitting upright and mostly intact on a silty seabed that just begs for a torch beam to cut through it. We love a wreck with character, and this trawler delivers. Drop down, and you’re immediately enveloped by that familiar chill of the North Atlantic, a cold embrace that keeps the silty particles dancing, but the visibility here can be surprisingly good on a calm day. It’s the sheer density of life that strikes you first. Crab and lobster tuck into every nook, their antennae waving as you pass. Conger eels, some truly enormous, peer out from collapsed sections of the hull. Our favourite spot is the wheelhouse, still fairly intact, where we've seen squat lobsters clinging to the gauges like tiny, curious mechanics. If you’re into proper wreck penetration, there are some swim-throughs, but watch the silt. It’s easily stirred, and a moment of poor buoyancy control can turn exploration into a zero-vis scramble. For divers who appreciate history, a bit of a chill, and wrecks that feel genuinely alive, the Girl Sandra is a standout. Just pick your weather window; a little sunshine makes a surprising difference to the light filtering down.
