Why dive here
With 112+ marine species recorded in the area - including blue whales, dolphins, dwarf minke whales, humpback whales and ocean sunfish (mola mola) - Wreck of Hispania offers some of Scottish West Coast's richest wreck diving.
The Hispania isn’t just a pile of metal. It’s a proper wreck, upright and largely intact, sitting at a depth that feels just right for a long, inquisitive dive. We love the way the light filters down through the usually green water, illuminating the bow and stern sections, especially when the current isn’t too feisty. It’s the kind of place where you can spend an hour just exploring the holds, imagining the cargo, or peering into the bridge area, now home to a resident conger eel or two. What makes Hispania a standout for us is the atmosphere; it’s genuinely eerie and beautiful at the same time. The deck is carpeted in dead man's fingers, a ghostly white against the rust, and you’ll often find plumose anemones waving gently from the superstructure. Keep an eye out for curious wrasse darting in and out of the crevices, and if you’re lucky, a seal might just cruise by for a look. This isn’t a tropical shallow water frolic, but if you're comfortable with colder water and a bit of current, you’ll find it incredibly rewarding. Our best dives here have always been on a slack tide, giving us ample time to really soak it all in.
