Wreck of Mayfly - Scottish West Coast

The Mayfly isn't just a hunk of metal; it’s a time capsule, sitting upright and surprisingly intact on the seabed off the Scottish West Coast. We love how the stern castle looms out of the green gloom, often shrouded in a shoal of pollack that seem to melt away as you approach. Dropping down, you’ll find the deck littered with crab and the occasional inquisitive wrasse peeking from broken portholes. It’s a proper expedition dive, often with a good push of current, which makes the reward of nosing around the engine room, or imagining the lifeboats being lowered, all the more satisfying. This site suits divers comfortable with colder water and a bit of a challenge, those who appreciate history as much as marine life. Our favourite moment is always finning past the bow, seeing the anchor chain disappear into the sand, and picturing her final moments. Go on a calm day, and the visibility can surprise you, letting the light penetrate just enough to illuminate the ghostly structure.
