Why dive here
With 77+ marine species recorded in the area - including blue sharks, dwarf minke whales, humpback whales, ocean sunfish (mola mola) and jellyfish lake - Long Reef offers some of Nova Scotia's richest reef diving. Water ranges 1-17°C, warmest August, September, October.
Southwest Beach Reef, for us, is one of those unexpected Nova Scotia surprises. We’re not talking about a vibrant tropical scene here; this is a rugged, North Atlantic beauty, and it asks a bit more of you. The reef system itself is a tangle of cold-water corals, mostly soft species that sway with the surge, creating this almost ethereal, muted landscape. We’ve had some truly magical dives here, particularly when the sunlight breaks through the green water and illuminates the red sea anemones clinging to the rocks. Visibility can be a mixed bag – sometimes it’s 15 metres and glorious, other times it’s a bit soupy at 5 metres, but even then, there's a charm to the close-up exploration. Look for the little things: we’ve often spotted Northern Pipefish tucked into the kelp, and Little Skates resting on the sandy patches. Atlantic cod are common, cruising past with that familiar wary look. It's a site that rewards patience and a keen eye for macro life, rather than sweeping panoramas. We’d suggest a calm day, if you can get it, to truly appreciate the delicate structures. This isn’t a high-speed drift dive, it’s a place to slow down and absorb the unique character of Canada’s East Coast underwater world. It suits divers who appreciate temperate water ecosystems and are looking for something a bit different from the usual tropical fare.
Safety Notes
Cold water this month (avg 15°C). Drysuit or thick wetsuit (7mm+) recommended.
