Karang Lawee - Sumatra

Sha‘ab Abû Janzî might not be the most famous name on the Hurghada roster, but for us, it’s a quiet favourite, especially if you’re looking for a relaxed, critter-focused dive without the usual boat traffic. It’s essentially a long, finger-like reef stretching out, with a definite current that usually pushes you gently along one side. We prefer it when the current is mild, allowing us to really slow down and poke around the coral blocks. What we love here is the sheer density of everyday reef fish. You'll swim through clouds of Yellowstriped Cardinalfish, their silver scales catching the light, and watch Desjardin's Sailfin Tangs graze the hard corals. Keep an eye out for Peppered Squirrelfish tucked into crevices, their huge eyes seeming to glow in the dimmer spots. The reef here, while not dramatic in structure, is wonderfully alive with smaller life. We’ve had some cracking encounters with Bridled Dolphins passing through, usually in the blue off the main reef, so keep half an eye out for movement. This site really suits divers who enjoy a drift and appreciate the smaller details, rather than grand topography.
